Open Letter to the Democratic Party

As a lifelong, loyal, activist Democrat, I am extremely disappointed that my party is willing to put me in the position of possibly having to decide whether I want to vote for Bernie Sanders or, for the first time since being old enough to vote, not voting in the Presidential election. Bernie Sanders has made it perfectly clear that he doesn’t want to be a Democrat. He has mocked the party, spent months spreading dishonest information about President Obama, convinced his fans that he alone is responsible for everything that Democrats have said and accomplished for decades, demonstrated nothing that would indicate he has the experience, temperament, or diplomacy to be president, and is actually regressive on some points since he can’t grasp the idea of pragmatism.

I resent, terribly, that my party has allowed this man to crash our primary and forced us to endure insults and criticism from his hateful, misinformed supporters, many of whom are not Democrats. They have infiltrated every Democratic group on social media and lecture loyal Democrats about how we are splitting our party by speaking the truth about their candidate, who isn’t a member of our party. It’s insane and they are so uninformed that not only are they ignorant of history and facts, they don’t even understand the purpose of a primary.

To me, it seems reasonable that anyone who wants to run in a Democratic primary should have to have been a registered Democrat for at least a term of the office s/he seeks. Sanders should be no exception. What’s to keep Republicans from jumping into our races next time? And then telling all of us who actually are Democrats and support the Party that we are splitting our party by telling the truth about them?

I’m sure Republicans in open primary states are going to vote Sanders, because they think they can beat him. By allowing him in our primary, you are enabling him and them to make a joke of the system.

I spent years criticizing the Republican Party for allowing the people who called themselves tea party to make a joke of and harm (irreparably, I believe) their party. I will not remain silent while  emoprogs, with the help of right-wing trolls, do the same to the Democratic Party. You know how Republicans walked away and said they didn’t leave their party but their party left them? I’m feeling the same way.

Please, do not put this man on the primary ballot. Should he win, you will have taken away every registered Democrat’s ability to vote for a Democrat in the presidential election.

Not much makes me happier than seeing Democrats willing to stand up and be counted as Democrats and communicate and work within the system. Thank you for sharing it with us Sandy and I hope you shared it with DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz!

I am disgusted with the Democratic Party that I have been active in for 60 years. Sanders is not a Democrat. He uses the word to run as he knows he cannot win as a Socialist or as an Independent.

Sanders has nothing in common with the Democratic Party. It would be a disaster for the Democratic Party to nominate anyone as its standard bearer who took the label of Democrat whereas he has done nothing but bad mouth Democrats and could not get a single endorsement from any Democrat in Vermont.

The stakes are high, but I cannot see myself ever voting for Sanders.

Interesting thoughts but we must keep our cool. As I am a Democrat and not an Independent, I still like his plan for universal healthcare, expanding medicare for all. I would like to see this country reduce the age for Medicare from 65 to 60 immediately. And then keep reducing it until everyone is covered. That would eliminate the shock, and slowly ween the insurance companies into the system.
---There are other both liberal and progressive aspects of Bernie's platform that are right on the money.
But- even though Bernie is running as an Independent for the Democratic nomination, Democrats have to be remind full that at the end of the day, regardless the post by Sandy, if Bernie is the nominee, than in order to keep the Republicans from controlling everything next year, come the general election, we must vote for whoever is the candidate opposing the GOP, and not, repeat, not stay home acting like immature children in a boycott. Every vote counts to keep the GOP from cutting all our gains we have made. AND, what I also am concerned about, if Bernie would run as an independent like Sandy and other's suggest, than we split all of the Democratic votes between Bernie and Hillary, and at the end of election night, The GOP candidate will win. We need Democrats united voting for one person for the general election.

True. Bernie Sanders never ever called himself a democrat until he needed a strong Party to hijack.
He has always aligned with a fringe group, just as the tea party constituents dod with the Republican party.
Yet he hopes to upseat the truest Democrat, Hillary Clinton, and gain the bounty of the Dem Party to assist him in the GE. He is a spoiler, speaks ill & slanders the very Party he hopes to back him, financially & with votes & support.
Sanders is most definately not worthy of the support of the Dem Party.
He needs to proove that he is a Dem or latch himself to another Party.
I have no doubt if he suddenly & stupidly chose to run as an Indy he would still l9se to oue Dem candidate & perhaps risk a Republican win in the GE.
What would that 'progressivly' do for this Nation.
He would succeed in destroying the only viable way to dismantle the GOP stronghold in DC.
That's not Dem nor Progressive. That is Bernie Sanders, however. He is Neither.
The DNC would be wise to send this loon packing & keep their Dem Party strong.
He isn't worthy of the Dem support. I agree completely with the OP.
He needs to be made aware that the Dem Party will NOT be there to support him.
Perhaps the GOP will back him since his goal is similar to theirs.
To upseat the only candidate that can keep the Nation of, by, & for the citizens.
He will not protect the mission of the true Dem Party.
He should be cut loose & fond his own way.
He is not a Dem nor Progressive.

Ernie, if Sanders should manage to get the nomination, it would only be because Republicans voted for him in the primary (they are already planning to do that) and they won't vote for him in the general. He can not possibly win the general.

I agree with you Sandy 100%. I find it downright wrong to let a non Democrat run on a Democratic ticket. Also, Sander's has divided our party and some of his supporter's seem so mis informed.....
